📍what is a chemical burn
𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧 - A direct result when the fumes from the Adhesive comes in contact with the Sclera (the white portion of the eye). causing redness, dryness & irritation
• a reaction clients get on their eyes during a lash application process, causing the fumes from the adhesive to entire they eye. (no adhesive actually gets in the eye)
• the fumes from the adhesive is Cyanoacrylate, a main ingredient in mostly every adhesive, which is what causes the adhesive to stick! it is the strongest ingredient and the most common.
📍Common symptoms of a chemical burn
• irritation on eyes
• redness
• dryness
📍How can you get it
• a chemical burn usually happens when our eyelids aren’t closed shut. any little crack, can cause fumes to go in. when your eyes are watering excessively, that can also cause a chemical burn as well. also, when our eyes are jittery, that causes fumes to enter your eyes VERY easily.
• If your eyes are jittery or flickering, causing them to open and close rapidly
• you open your eyes during the lash extensions procedure
• eyes won’t close shut all the way
• your lash tech is resting their isolation tweezers too hard on the eye patches & are pushing down the lower eyelid
• tape or gel patches are on the lower water line instead of under
📍How to avoid
• try to avoid caffeine 1-2 hours before scheduled appointment. caffeine can cause jitteriness in the eye lids.
• make sure eyes are completely shut!
• if you feel any discomfort, let your lash tech know! please keep in mind, we are not mind readers 🥺 we can’t tell when something is wrong if you do not speak up 💔
📍Extra information
• this will typically last for 2-3 days! chemical burns cause your eyes to become extremely dry and irritated. keeping them lubricated throughout the day helps tremendously!
*eye drops you can use, 𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗜𝗙𝗬*
• chemical burns can happen on both eyes (it happens to me) but it’s very common for you to get one on just 1 eye!
• a chemical burn and an actual allergic reaction are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS!!!! please please make sure your lash tech knows this as well!!! 🙏🏻
📍How to know you have an Allergy
𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Occurs when the immune system overreacts to a foreign substance such as an ingredient in eyelash glue. Can occur in one or both of the eyes. If in both, it may be extremely severe in one eye than the other.
𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 :
• redness
• itching
• swelling
• hives
it is important to remove the eyelash extensions immediately and to seek medical attention if necessary!
